New
Heat-Tolerant, High-Density Planting Maize Germplasm—“Jing
22DFP127”
Breeding
Background: A high-quality maize inbred line recently developed and
fully validated, suitable for cultivation in the Huang-Huai region
and ideal for use as a paternal parent. Derived from the Jing 2416K
and Suwan germplasm resources, this inbred line exhibits significant
differences from other existing heat-tolerant parental lines and
demonstrates breakthrough improvements in agronomic traits.
Characteristics:
This inbred line perfectly inherits the excellent traits of Jing
2416K, including immunity to rust, high resistance to bacterial wilt,
absence of hollow stalks, high yield potential, and good quality. At
the same time, it demonstrates breakthrough core advantages of heat
tolerance and tolerance to high-density planting. The recommended
planting density is 5,000–6,000 plants per mu. The kernels are
deep and wide, with 16–18 rows of kernels per ear. Its plant
height is significantly reduced compared to the base variety, and it
exhibits uniform growth in the field, successfully overcoming the
technical challenges faced by some warm-temperate germplasm resources
in the region north of the Yellow River, such as excessive vegetative
growth and susceptibility to bacterial wilt. New corn varieties
developed using “Xiaoqi” as the paternal parent show
greatly improved adaptability, covering multiple corn-growing
ecological zones from Jilin and Liaoning southward to the area north
of the Yangtze River.
Performance
of the hybrid: Results from the fall 2025 field trials showed that
the new corn hybrid developed using “Xiaoqi” performed
exceptionally well at a planting density of 5,500 plants per mu, with
significant yield increases observed at all trial sites: the trial
site in Tieling City, Liaoning Province, achieved a 22.8% yield
increase compared to the control variety; the trial site in
Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, achieved a 16.2% yield increase
compared to the control variety; and at the trial site in ZhengzhouCity, Henan
Province, yields increased by 14.7% compared to the control variety,
fully demonstrating the superior yield potential and environmental
adaptability of this germplasm. In 2026, small-scale trials of this
hybrid combination were conducted in Yazhou Bay, where it continued
to maintain the aforementioned excellent performance.
Overall,
under a planting density of 5,500 plants per mu in the region north
of the Yellow River, “Xiaoqi” demonstrated significantly
higher yield potential than other heat-tolerant control varieties;
when planted in the Huai River basin, its performance showed a yield
increase of more than 6% compared to some control varieties. As a
high-quality maize breeding parent, “Xiaoqi” possesses
immense yield potential and broad prospects for promotion and
application. Although the development and release of this
heat-tolerant line were slightly later than those of similar
germplasm, “good things come to those who wait”—its
outstanding comprehensive traits endow it with exceptional
application and market value.
